Nearly 300 cases of cholera recorded in Tshopo province

Kisangani, April 9th, 2025 (CPA) – 292 (Two hundred and ninety-two) cases of cholera, including 57 (fifty-seven deaths), have been recorded in Tshopo province, in the north-east of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), CPA has learnt on Tuesday from an official source.

« To date, the Tshopo province has recorded a total of 292 cases of cholera, including 57 deaths. These cases have been confirmed in the territories of Ubundu and Isangi and in the town of Kisangani », has declared the provincial governor, Paulin Lendongolia Lebabonga.

‘Since the 9th epidemiological week of 2024, from February 24th to March 2nd, 2025, we have noticed a significant increase in cases in the health zones of Ubundu, Yakusu, Makiso in Kisangani and Wanyarukula,’ he has indicated. Three of the 20 samples sent to the National Institute for Biomedical Research (INRB), he has continued, have been confirmed positive for “vibrio cholerae”, the germ responsible for this epidemic. ‘The gravity of the situation is such that I am officially declaring a cholera epidemic in our province’, has added the head of the provincial executive. Faced with this health crisis, the provincial government has launched an urgent appeal for help. ‘We are seeking the support of the central government, our health partners and humanitarian organisations to strengthen our capacity to fight and eradicate this epidemic’, has stressed Paulin Lendongolia. He has also called on the population to observe preventive hygiene measures to limit the spread of cholera. ‘When signs of acute diarrhoea accompanied by dehydration appear, it is imperative to go immediately to the nearest health centre’, he has advised. With this in mind, the provincial governor has also reassured the public that the epidemiological situation is being closely monitored, and that additional measures will be taken in the coming days to reinforce the fight against the epidemic. Faced with this health emergency, the provincial authority has called for mobilisation to counter this devastating epidemic and protect its inhabitants, before announcing a state of health emergency due to the rapid spread of cholera in the province.
